Pool villas and country houses around one of Mallorca’s loveliest old towns – at the northern tip of the Tramuntana, ten minutes from the bay at Puerto Pollensa.
Families, cycling, culture
Pollensa (Pollença in Catalan) is a proper Mallorcan town rather than a resort. Its stone streets lead up from a café-lined square to the Calvari steps, and on Sunday mornings the whole centre fills with market stalls selling cheese, olives, pottery and flowers. It has been a favourite with British visitors for generations, and it is easy to see why.
A villa here gives you the best of both sides of the north: quiet countryside and mountain views on your doorstep, with the sandy beaches of Puerto Pollensa, the cove at Cala Sant Vicenç and the Formentor peninsula all within a short drive. It works brilliantly for families, multi-generational groups and keen cyclists.
Start in the Plaça Major, where the church of Nostra Senyora dels Àngels looks down on a square full of café tables. From here, 365 cypress-lined steps climb to the little chapel on Calvari hill – one step for every day of the year, and well worth the effort for the view across the rooftops to the bay.
On the edge of town you’ll find the old stone bridge known locally as the Roman bridge, and in July and August the cloister of Sant Domingo hosts the Pollensa Festival, one of the island’s best-loved summer music festivals.
Puerto Pollensa – a long, gently shelving sandy beach in a sheltered bay, ideal for young children.
Cala Sant Vicenç – a cluster of small coves with clear water, set beneath dramatic cliffs.
Formentor beach – a pine-fringed strip of sand on the Formentor peninsula, also reachable by boat from the port.
Alcúdia and Muro – miles of fine white sand on Alcúdia Bay, about 20 minutes away.
Pollensa sits where the Serra de Tramuntana meets the sea, so walkers have everything from gentle valley strolls to the climb up Puig de Maria, with its hilltop sanctuary. The road out to the Cap de Formentor lighthouse is one of Europe’s great drives and a rite of passage for road cyclists, who come in their thousands each spring and autumn. Golfers can play at Golf Pollensa, just outside town.
